Going To The Potty (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition) (First Experiences) School & Library Binding

Author: Visit Amazons Fred Rogers Page - ISBN: 0613050657 - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

DESCRIPTION

From Publishers Weekly

Going to the Potty, a title in Rogerss First Experiences series, handles a sensitive subject with the same quiet candor and respect for young audiences that are the hallmark of his Mister Rogers Neighborhood TV show. Large color photos present children using the toilet, and the straightforward text emphasizes the benefits to the child of mastering this developmental step. Unlike other books on this subject, which can be overly cutesy and condescending, this one offers practical information and gentle encouragement. Children may be disappointed that Mr. Rogers himself appears only on the books jacket, but parents will find this a valuable resource. (27st

Signature in the Cell

Signature in the Cell [Kindle Edition]

Author: Stephen C. Meyer - ISBN: B002C949BI - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

DESCRIPTION

“Signature in the Cell is a defining work in the discussion of life’s origins and the question of whether life is a product of unthinking matter or of an intelligent mind. For those who disagree with ID, the powerful case Meyer presents cannot be ignored in any honest debate. For those who may be sympathetic to ID, on the fence, or merely curious, this book is an engaging, eye-opening, and often eye-popping read” — American Spectator

Named one of the top books of 2009 by the Times Literary Supplement (London), this controversial and compelling book from Dr. Stephen C. Meyer presents a convincing new case for intelligent design (ID), based on revolutionary discoveries in science and DNA. Along the way, Meyer argues that Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution as expounded in The Origin of Species did not, in fact, refute ID. If you enjoyed Francis Collins’s The Language of God, you’ll find much to ponder—about evolution, DNA, and intelligent design—in Signature in the Cell.

I come to this book with two peeves, one pet, the other a stray that is beginning to wear out its welcome.

My pet peeve is fanatics who attack ID out of ideological compulsion, rather than using the "think" cells hidden deep within their brains to evaluate and argue. That includes most of the reviewers who gave the book 1 or 2 stars so far. Meyer, we are told, is "lazy," a "creationist," "idiot," "fraud," and "liar" who hawks "error-prone" "snake-oil," "gobbledygook," "pseudo-science." We should read Richard Dawkins new Greatest Show on Earth instead (I did -- it isnt about the origin of life, you numbskulls). One "reviewer" blasts the book after reading four sentences, and gets 69 of 128 "helpful" votes. Another "reviews" the first few pages and calls Meyer a liar.

Hardly any negative reviews even try to point to any scientific errors. Two exceptions: reviews by A Miller and K. M. Sternberg are worth reading. Sternbergs is particularly eloquent. (Though having written a couple books on the historical Jesus, I tend to wonder about the objectivity, awareness, and / or good sense of someone who thinks there is no evidence for the life of Jesus!)

My second peeve is a growing dislike for the way Discovery Institute often packages its arguments. I visited DI a year ago when another ID book came out -- I wont name it, seeing no need to embarrass the author. His presentation essentially said, "Look at all the wonders of creation. How can evolution possibly explain all that?" When Q & A time came, I was the only one to ask any critical questions. "That sounds impressive, but why dont you engage the explanations evolutionary biologists offer for those features?" Like the talk, the book (he gave me a copy) simply ignored detailed arguments.

This book was purchased on recommendation by my text books website, and I have NOT been disappointed!
For beginning Pathophysiology, this book is incredibly easy to understand and the visual depictions of processes helps you "see development in progress" in your minds eye. (This concept is incredibly important when it comes time for exam, because you have NO IDEA what questions will be asked about the processes. With this guide, you understand the process all the way through, so youre prepared to answer ANY questions!)
I have purchased my textbook (INCREDIBLY WORDY and COMPLICATED) and flash cards (Great for studying once you understand the diseases you must know, but not much help in this initial learning process) and another Pathophysiology guide suggested by another nursing program...all of which I feel may have been wasted money. The textbook will be useful as a reference...but its definitely NOT easy reading.
This Pathophysiology Made Incredibly Easy is PERFECT for me. I even have the Pathophysiology Made Incredibly Visual, which is another great reference, but overall, this book is my favorite!
I hope this review helps you in your purchase decision...and I wish you the best in your studies.

The Selfish Gene

The Selfish Gene [Unabridged] [Audible Audio Edition]

Author: - ISBN: B004U8NB2M - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

DESCRIPTION

Richard Dawkins brilliant reformulation of the theory of natural selection has the rare distinction of having provoked as much excitement and interest outside the scientific community as within it. His theories have helped change the whole nature of the study of social biology, and have forced thousands to rethink their beliefs about life.

In his internationally best-selling, now classic, volume, The Selfish Gene, Dawkins explains how the selfish gene can also be a subtle gene. The world of the selfish gene revolves around savage competition, ruthless exploitation, and deceit, and yet, Dawkins argues, acts of apparent altruism do exist in nature. Bees, for example, will commit suicide when they sting to protect the hive, and birds will risk their lives to warn the flock of an approaching hawk.

I read The Selfish Gene (2nd edition, 1989) because it is one of the twenty books Charlie Munger recommends in the second edition of Poor Charlies Almanack (which I have recently read and recommend very strongly indeed).

Im going to quote Dawkins from the preface to the original edition as he provides an excellent summary of the central message of the book and its effect upon him (and me):

"We are survival machines - robot vehicles blindly programmed to preserve the selfish molecules known as genes. This is a truth which still fills me with astonishment. Though I have known it for years, I never seem to get fully used to it."

Using one of the many excellent analogies utilised throughout his book, Dawkins explains that we are like a chess computer program that has been programmed by its creator to play in its absence. The programmer (genes) takes no part in the game (life) but instead provides the tools for its vehicle (animal, plant etc.) to play the game on its behalf.

I am glad that Dawkins says that he never gets fully used to this idea. I find it very difficult to replace the idea of my primacy in my body with the idea above. It requires a sort of `flip in ones perception - but it is so different to what our senses tell us that it flips back without a conscious effort (or so I find, anyway). But how many of us have not regularly had to do battle with themselves to do what they know they should do rather than what they feel an urge to do? Dawkins ideas provide an excellent framework in which to help understand these problems, which I suspect is a major part of the reason why Munger recommended this book.
